How to Get Rid of Negative Thoughts - Mondays With Maya

Happy Monday, friends!

We all try to keep positive but sometimes those pesky little negative thoughts can creep in and ruin all our good endeavors! What can we do to get rid of these negative thoughts? I spoke to my long time friend and fellow yogi, Kia Miller, about the matter.

Kia says that thoughts tend to follow energy and if we have low energy or we haven't been taking care of ourselves, then our thoughts will tend to be negative. If we have been eating right and exercising and resting enough, it's easier to get a good flow of positive reflections going. Unfortunately, our brains tend to have a negative bias, so we have to work extra hard at getting and keeping the good thoughts in there. We shouldn't leave it to its own devices because with so much negativity going on in the world, it's easy to get down.

Thankfully, in Kundalini, there are some quick little tools that can be done to help to shift the energy and help shift the way that we think. This gives us the opportunity to approach the negative thoughts from a different perspective. Here's a nice quick little kundalini exercise to help get the negativity out.

Exercise for Getting Rid of Negative Thoughts

This is a meditation to increase your radiance because that is the energy that emanates from our very essence. It's the energy of protection and what we project. When we make our radiance strong, it's a great antidote to negativity.

  • Put both hands into the active gyan mudra (the index finger tucks into the thumb) with the arms up, palms forward, and hands level with the ears.
  • Gaze (drishti) to the tip of the nose but if that's uncomfortable, look to the floor.
  • Breathe in and out through the mouth with rounded lips (as if you were preparing to whistle).
  • Ideally, hold this for eleven minutes (but 3 or more is fine to start with).

If you enjoy this exercise, try to do it for 40 days and see how you feel and how it will impact your energy and radiance.

Studying with Kia Miller in her immersive teacher training was so much more than I imagined .
She prepared me to teach but also a lifelong journey into yoga. I hope to attend more sessions and advance training . Her workshop I attended was also an excellent and uplifting experience.
